I am a gumbo soup fan so, when I came across a large can of Publix Healthy Chunky Grilled Chicken & Sausage Gumbo Soup in the canned soup section of my local Publix Super Market, I was delighted. This soup looked very different. I decided to buy it, try it out and write a product review all about it. Here is what I discovered!
One large can of Publix Healthy Chunky Grilled Chicken & Sausage Gumbo Soup costs around two dollars. Each can has two servings in it. This creative soup has grilled white meat chicken, andoulle sausage slices, diced tomatoes, rice, green chiles, jalapeno peppers, green bell peppers, red bell peppers, onions, red pepper, celery and sea salt, among many other ingredients. Wow. What a flavor packing combination. I could not wait to taste this dish.
This soup is perfect for microwave cooking and that is how I chose to prepare it. You do not add water to this soup. I poured the contents of the can into a large microwave safe bowl, stirred, covered and heated on high for two minutes. I then stirred again and served. A friend and I both tried this soup together. It looked great and smelled delicious.
When I tasted Publix Healthy Chunky Grilled Chicken & Sausage Gumbo Soup, my first move was to grab a glass of water. Boy, is this soup fiery. Really spicy. Way too spicy for my taste. I do not mind a flavorful and zesty gumbo but, this one will burn your tongue and throat up. Not too mention your stomach. Mercy. There are way too may peppers in this gumbo. Pepper overkill. I could not even eat it. I think if some beans had been added and less peppers, it would have been tolerable. This soup does have a nice amount of sausage and rice in it. It is quite chunky. My friend and both agreed that the peppers were way overdone. Even adding crackers didn’t help much.
I rate this gumbo two stars out of five stars. If you like mind blowing hot stuff, you might like this. If not, you are out of luck. I won’t be buying this soup again. It may be low cal, low in fat and low in cholesterol but, it is too peppery for me to enjoy. One serving has only 120 calories in it. Just 25 of those calories come from fat. One serving has 2.5 grams of total fat, 1 gram of saturated fat, 0 grams of trans fat, 0.5 grams of polyunsaturated fat, 1 gram of monounsaturated fat, 15 mg’s of cholesterol, 470 mg’s of sodium, 640 mg’s of potassium, 18 grams of total carbs, 1 gram of dietary fiber, 4 grams of sugars and 8 grams of protein. This product does contain wheat and soy ingredients.
I did not enjoy trying Publix Healthy Chunky Grilled Chicken & Sausage Gumbo Soup but, I did have fun writing this product review about it. If you are looking for some of the spiciest gumbo you have ever tried, this one is your best bet. My tongue has yet to recover. Whew. While the sodium is low in this one, the fire and bite is high! I discovered that it may be a healthy soup but, it is not for me!
