The Harper Connelly series by Charlaine Harris consists of four books entitled Grave Sight, Grave Surprise, An Ice Cold Grave and Grave Secret. These books are a truly unusual mystery series that will capture your attention within the first few pages. In the series, the main character, Harper Connelly, was struck by lightening as a teenager which left her with the ability to sense dead people and see the last few moments of their lives preceding their deaths. As a result of the lightening strike, Harper hears a buzzing in her head when she is close to a dead person. The more recent the death, the stronger the buzzing is in her head. She can become physically exhausted from the experience of finding a body and telling its story.
In the first book in the series, Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris, Harper Connelly starts out right away sensing dead people and the reader is drawn in immediately. Harper travels around the United States with her stepbrother Tolliver Lang essentially performing two kinds of services for others. Folks often hire Harper to attempt to locate a dead body. Or since she can see the last few minutes before a person dies and sense their thoughts and feelings, she can help survivors understand the cause of death for someone who has already passed away. Even more people, sometimes even law enforcement officials, enlist her help locating dead bodies. Many people are willing to pay to find out what might have killed a loved one. In one instance, a woman was convinced her husband’s ex-wife came into her home and drowned her husband in the bathtub. Harper was able to see that it was the woman’s cat that knocked a radio into the bathtub and no foul play was involved in the husband’s death. In the course of her life and investigations, if Harper ever finds a body that has not yet been discovered, she will notify the authorities. Sometimes this is a hunter in a remote location or a yet undiscovered suicide.
The second book in the series, Grave Surprise by Charlaine Harris, is just as fascinating as the first book Grave Sight. Harper and her stepbrother continue to travel around and Harper locates dead bodies. She gets the opportunity to prove that she has a legitimate talent when a college professor invites her to identify bodies and causes of death in a graveyard where sealed burial records were just uncovered. Along the way, Harper and Tolliver become involved in an investigation. Many folks cannot understand her gift of hearing dead people and instead think she must be involved in the crimes themselves. This book reveals a few more details of Harper’s family life and childhood. She and Tolliver also have a psychic friend who foreshadows that Harper will be happy in the time of ice.
In the third book, An Ice Cold Grave by Charlaine Harris, Harper is called into a small town that has teenage boys disappearing. Some people believe the boys ran away but some police officers are skeptical. The grandmother of one of the missing boys is footing the bill to have Harper come and try to locate the missing boys. This becomes Harper’s first experience with a serial killer and a mass burial. What happens in this book is even more shocking than the first two. This book also picks up on what the psychic foretold in the previous book Grave Surprise. During an ice storm, Harper and her stepbrother realize that they are romantically interested in each other.
The fourth book in the series, Grave Secret by Charlaine Harris, delves into the past as well as the present, exploring some mysteries in Harper and Tolliver’s past. Harper had a pleasant early childhood that transformed into a hard life after her lawyer parents became involved in drugs and a partying lifestyle. Her mother later remarried which gave Harper two stepbrothers and later two little sisters. Harper’s sister has been missing since they were teenagers. Harper and Tolliver carry the missing girl’s backpack everywhere that they go and hope to locate her one day. In the mean time, they continue to visit their younger sisters and search for dead people to make a living.
Throughout the books Grave Sight, Grave Surprise, An Ice Cold Grave and Grave Secret Harper always says the dead people want to be found. That is the belief that she lives by. These books are well-written and each one is a page-turner.
