When I was pregnant the last thing on my mind was food and every time I would think about it, I would get a little queasy. I took my prenatal vitamins routinely, but soon realized I was going to have to find a way to add healthy nutrients into my diet. I wanted a healthy pregnancy, and that meant proper pregnant nutrition. I soon discovered several ways to add healthy nutrients to my daily routine of what I ate. I also found ways to get nutrients in my system without having to eat solid foods. During my pregnancy, it was much easier for me to consume liquids than it was solids. Here are some of the ways I found to add healthy nutrients into my diet:
People in general need calcium, especially expecting women needing proper pregnant nutrition. Unfortunately, whole milk has lots of fat that isn’t necessary for your body, especially if you’re drinking a lot of it. I’ve heard several different views on milk while pregnant, some women crave milk and others get sick at the mention of it. If milk makes you gag, continue taking your prenatal vitamins and try eating lots of other dairy. Skim milk is produced by a process that skims layers of fat out of the milk. The end result is low fat milk full of calcium and protein. Switching to skim milk was a simple way for me to add healthy nutrients into my diet and provide a healthier alternative to soda and coffee.
Fruit Juice Not From Concentrate
While I was pregnant, there was a multitude of fruits that made me sick or had too much acid in them to keep down. Of course, it’s a simple fact that proper pregnant nutrition includes fruits. I began to drink fruit juice to add healthy nutrients from fruit when I couldn’t stand to eat them in solid form. In addition to adding healthy nutrients, drinking fruit juice also helped me to stay away from sugary sodas and caffeinated drinks. There are tons of fruit juice blends on the market today. Try some different blends out to add healthy nutrients to your daily caloric intake. As long as the juice you select isn’t from concentrate, you can easily get 2 fruit servings per 8oz glass of juice!
Snack Cheese Singles
When pregnant, it’s incredibly important to make sure you add healthy nutrients such as calcium and protein so that you’re getting proper pregnant nutrition. Snack cheese singles helped me boost my calcium intake and make sure my growing baby had some great bones! The Laughing Cow makes several different kinds of single serving snack cheese packets. These were great when I didn’t want a huge meal and was too exhausted to go through the process of any food preparation.
Smoothies – Add Vegetables!
I quickly learned that it was much easier for me to take in liquid nutrients rather than solids when I was pregnant. By drinking tons of smoothies I was able to add healthy nutrients into my diet and maintain proper pregnant nutrition by making them at home with fresh fruits and vegetables. There are many smoothie recipes that include fruits and vegetables. I also learned that a simple tip to add tons of healthy nutrients was to throw in half of an avocado into any fruit smoothie I was making.
Dried Fruit and Nut Trail Mix
When I felt I was able to eat solid food, I ate a lot of dried fruit and nut trail mix blends. These trail mixes helped me to add healthy nutrients into my diet when I was really craving solid food. The dried fruits were sweet and a great alternative to candies and chocolate. The nuts helped to satisfy my craving for salty foods such as popcorn. This healthy alternative helped me to quickly add vitamins, necessary nutrients and fiber into my diet!
Whole Grain Crackers
Every pregnant woman knows the battle of morning sickness, which is usually more like all day sickness. One of the tried and true tips to relieve this feeling is crackers. I ate a lot of wheat thins as a healthy alternative to saltine crackers in my early pregnancy. Crackers such as Wheat Thins helped me to not only add healthy nutrients like whole grains and fiber into my diet, but were also a major cure to my morning sickness.
Celery with Peanut Butter
Celery with peanut butter was one of the biggest aids in my pregnancy when I needed an extra boost of protein. I was able to add healthy nutrients into my diet and keep up with proper pregnant nutrition with the celery such as fiber as well as protein from the peanut butter. The peanut butter helped to satisfy more of my sweet tooth cravings while adding a great dose of fiber and protein to my diet. Eating vegetables was incredibly difficult for me throughout my pregnancy, so celery was a great snack food for me!
