Heat exhaustion does not just occur in dry, arid deserts. It can also occur in temperate climates if you receive too much sun exposure. What can you do to protect yourself from heat exhaustion?

Know the Tell-tale Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion can creep up on you when you least expect it, such as when you are sunbathing on the beach, going on a hike or walking through a park. It does not even take a particularly hot day for heat exhaustion to strike. All it takes is sun exposure, an inadequate water supply and physical exertion. Some of the tell-tale signs of heat exhaustion include confusion, lethargy, and drowsiness, followed by a splitting headache, disorientation and unexplained exhaustion.

Stay Out of the Sun

Direct sun exposure can cause heat exhaustion, which is why it is best to try and stay out of the sun as much as possible during the hottest parts of the day. When you are out in the sun, wear a wide-brimmed hat or carry a parasol to help deflect the sun’s harmful rays, even if you will only be out in the sun for a few moments.When you add up all the time you have been exposed to the sun each day, this can add up and lead to heat exhaustion.

Take Immediate Action

As soon as you notice the symptoms of heat exhaustion creeping up on you, sit down or have a trusted friend or family member take you home. Elevate your legs and try to get some rest until you are seen by a medical practitioner. Heat exhaustion can cause confusion, so do not try to walk around.

If you are suffering from a mild bout of heat exhaustion, plenty of rest and fluids will usually help bring you round. But if you are in any doubt or symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to obtain immediate medical advice and care.

Stay Away from Energy Drinks and Drink Water Instead

Energy drinks can give you a quick buzz when you start to feel your energy levels lagging, but they will dehydrate you, especially when you drink them during warmer weather. Instead of filling up on energy drinks, carry around a bottle of water instead and make sure you drink enough throughout the day. Take regular sips of water and replenish your water supply often.

Do Not Ignore the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Ignoring the signs of heat exhaustion will not make your symptoms go away. Rather, you may end up with even more serious health issues to worry about, as your body dehydrates, your feet collapse from under you and you are rushed to hospital.
