Summer’s nearly here and with it comes free flowing hair and the reality that hair can be damaged by wind, sun and chlorine. Protecting your hair from this damage will help to prevent split ends, brittle or frizzy hair and that drab look that unprotected hair gets. Remember that your hair is an extension of you and it needs just as much tender loving care as your skin does. Follow these 5 summer hair care tips to protect your hair from sun damage.
Treat your hair more gently during hot summer months. Shampoo less often or consider using a gentle moisturizing shampoo in place of your regular shampoo. Allow your hairs natural oils to gently condition your hair. Can’t stand shampooing less often? Consider a gentle brush to work oils through hair and wear hair up on your head with a clip or pretty hair holder to help get an extra day in before shampooing.
Protect your head
What’s that? You don’t like hats? Try a pretty scarf tied around your head or use a beach umbrella. Use a leave in conditioner for hair and protect it from the elements. There are many great floppy hats, baseball caps as well as scarf options to choose from. Pull hair up into a bun or pony tail to help keep it covered if you’re using a baseball type cap in lieu of a large floppy hat.
Visit your stylist
Schedule a visit to your stylist at the beginning of the season to get rid of dead split ends and shape your hair. Follow up with maintenance trims throughout the summer at intervals your stylist recommends. This will help to get rid of damage that may creep up the hair shaft and cause further damage.
Remember to hydrate your body from the inside out. Drink plenty of water and moisturize your body as well as using a moisturizer for hair. Use a conditioning moisturizer on hair and wear that hat to further protect yourself.
Deep condition hair throughout hot summer months. Hair that is regularly exposed to the sun needs regular deep conditioning treatment. Use a moisturizing hair care product that can be left in for a few hours or overnight for the best results. Gently rinse out in the morning.
Remember, only use natural bristled brushes and only brush your hair when it’s completely dry. Use a large toothed comb to gently comb out wet hair. Avoid sun during the hottest part of the day (approximately 10:00 am to 3:00 pm depending on your location).
