It was not too long ago that I faced the greatest challenge in my life. I was alone, heartbroken, left behind by someone I loved. There was little hope, no joy, and great pain every day I woke up and forced myself to get out of bed. Friends and family gathered around, and their support meant the world to me, but there was still an emptiness and loss inside me that no one could fill.
Yet in all of these struggles there was one thing that held my hand and kept me sane: my Bible. Multiple chapters and passages of it helped me stay above water, but there were five verses in particular that held my feet firmly in the foundation of the Cross. The five verses that comforted me then and continue to inspire me are:
1. John 10:10 (New International Version ) – ” The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
At a time in my life when simply getting up and driving to work was a chore, God reminded me that He’s there. This verse speaks two things to me: it reminds me that there is an enemy bent on taking away everything the Lord has given me; however, it also says that Jesus came to give me a full life. No, the enemy has nothing on me.
2. Romans 6:23 (NIV) – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
What happened to me was partially my fault, and I felt the weight of my guilt and shame on my shoulders. But Romans 6:23 restored my hope in the redemption that can only be found through Christ. This inspirational verse tells me that I get to live forever with the Lord, despite my shortcomings.
3. 2 Timothy 1:7 (King James Version) – “For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
What a powerful verse! As I picked myself up off the ground and moved forward, I was afraid. I did not know what to do with myself. But once I was able to grasp its truth, I learned to recognize when fear was driving my actions. This verse has changed my heart, because it teaches that fear is not from the Lord. He gives us strength, love, and a peaceful mind, if we let him.
4. Hebrews 11:1 (KJV) – “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
This verse inspired me to hold true to my faith, even though it seemed like there was no hope left. I had to choose to believe that God would take care of me and renew my life, and he did. It’s never easy to believe that everything will turn out all right when you cannot see where the road is taking you, but time and time again God has proved he is faithful. This verse is one of the most inspirational verses in the Bible.
5. Isaiah 49:16 (English Standard Version) – “Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.”
It felt like no one could love me. I was not worth anyone’s time of day. Yet this verse showed me that I was worthy of my God’s love. The God of the universe has my name written on the palms of his hands? How awesome is it to find a verse in the Bible that professes such love!
There are other inspiration verses in the Bible, but God used these particular verses to bring me closer to him. I keep them tucked away in my heart, and they are always there when I need them.
