4 Ways Preteens Can Earn Money Over the Summer

When you’re a preteen, it can be hard to earn extra money if your parents are not willing to pay you a lot for cleaning jobs and chores. If you’re under 14, you won’t be able to work at places like the mall or restaurants because you don’t have a job permit. Don’t lose hope yet. There are several ways you can make good money over the summer without needing a job permit.

Babysitter

This job is especially popular for young girls who like taking care of children. If you enjoy watching kids and spending time with them, this a really fun way to earn money over the summer. Even though not all babysitting jobs will be open to you because you can’t drive yet (some parents require that you can drive) if you’re parents can find you a way to get you to the job, there are still some that you will be accepted for. Before you become a babysitter, go online and see when the local Red Cross babysitting classes are held. It will teach you everything you will need to know how to do to become a babysitter.

Tutor

If there are some younger kids in your neighborhood who took the same classes as you, you may be able to help over the summer to tutor them if you still have some of your old textbooks. If you got top grades while you were in their school year, their parents may be interested in hiring you for some extra math or reading help. Ask your parents to see if they have any ideas on helping you become a tutor.

Pet Walker/Sitter

If you can’t find any babysitting jobs, and you get along well with pets, this is a great job option for you! A lot of people have pets but don’t have time to walk them or watch them over the summer. It’s usually not a lot of work, and it can pay very well. This is especially great if you want to become a veterinarian when you are older.

Paperboy

If you live in a larger town, you can become a paper boy usually around the age of 11 or 12 (depending on the requirements at your town’s paper). All you need to be able to do is have transportation to deliver the papers. If your parents can’t drive you around the neighborhood, think about using your bike like they used to. It’s a great way to get some exercise in the morning and earn some extra spending money. Another great reason to become a paperboy is that you can still do additional work in the afternoon to earn even more money, since most jobs are usually finished by 9 am.

In addition to these, there are many other great job opportunities for preteens over the summer. By starting early, you will be able to get a lot of good resources for jobs that you can put on resumes when you apply to bigger jobs later on.
