Planning a trip to Jacksonville, Florida, and looking for a place to go skateboarding while you are there? Here are four skateboard parks that you may want to consider giving a try:
1. Kona Skate Park
Located at 8739 Kona Avenue, the Kona Skate Park is open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. and on Sundays from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m. General admission fees range from $3 to $10 plus there is an additional $5 per person liability waiver fee for first time visitors. Parents should note that waivers not signed at the Kona Skate Park itself must be notarized. A copy of the waiver may be downloaded off the Kona Skate Park website. BMX bikers may access the park on Mondays and Tuesdays through Thursdays from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and again on Sundays from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m. In-line skaters are also welcome. Helmets and other safety gear are generally required for those under 16 years of age.
2. Ed Austin Skate Park
Ed Austin Skate Park is located on 11751 McCormick Road and is open daily, year round. Admission is free and safety gear is required. The park is maintained through a partnership with the City of Jacksonville and the Police Athletic League and features both street and vertical skateboarding areas.
3. Cuba Hunter Skate Park
Best used in the daylight hours, the 10,000 square foot Cuba Hunter Skate Park is located on 4380 Emerson Street. Owned by the City of Jacksonville, it is open daily, year round from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. and admission is free. The use of helmets and safety gear are required at the park. The park offers both street and vertical skateboarding opportunities. It is also considered part of a larger park, where visitors may bike, roller blade and participate in other recreational activities.
4. Boardz Skate Park and Pro Shop
Boardz is a combination skate shop and indoor skate park located on 11350 San Jose Boulevard. A helmet, safety gear and signed waiver of liability are required by all skaters. Admission and rental fees are fairly reasonable. Admission prices start at $7 and go up to $10 on holidays. Equipment rental prices start at $2 and go up to $5 per board rental. The indoor skate park is open year round, Tuesdays through Sundays and on select Mondays. Hours of operation vary.
