Reason 1: Skill
This is the obvious reason most people will never get any kind of record deal. If you don’t have the talent required, you will never get anywhere in the music business. No matter what your family or friends tell you, real talent and skill is what record labels are looking for. It doesn’t matter how hard you work or how many concerts you do. It doesn’t matter if you have a good image that could make it in the music industry. You can be the perfect person and fit all the details that a record label wants, but if you don’t have the skill required, you will never get anywhere. So what can you do? Talent and skill always comes with practice. If you are a singer, you will have to take more singing lessons. If you are an emcee, you will have to practice writing more complex or catchy lyrics. If you are with a rock band, you and your band will have to make songs that sound good and make people want to listen to more. The best way to find out what you need to get better at is getting an unbiased party to listen to your music and get them to critique it. This can’t be anyone who knows you because they probably wouldn’t want to hurt your feelings. There are many websites on the internet dedicated to giving music reviews for free or for a small price that will dig deep into music and give you the criticism you need.
Reason 2: Dedication and a Plan
Once you have skill down and are ready to take your career to the next level, you will need to dedicate as much time as any other full time job. You will have to be more dedicated then you are right now and I know that is a fact. If you think you have enough dedication, you don’t. You have to have a plan that you can follow and goals that you can reach. You need an ultimate goal that will take your career to the top. You need to go out and get as many concerts as you can find. Do them for free or for charity as these are easier to book. Give out as many free CD’s of your music as you can. You can’t expect to make and money or get a record deal if you don’t have any fans. An easy way to get fans is to give your music out free. Find people that like your style of music on the internet and give them free downloads. This is all necessary to create a buzz for you or your band and increase the possibility of getting a recording contract.
Reason 3: The Demo
If you do not create a professional image with your demo that you send out, your music will be in the trash. If you have a buzz and have the talent required, the last step is to send out demos and get that deal. Not many people get a record deal by the record labels finding them. Most have to send in demos and go through the normal process that almost every other musician has to do. So how can you stand out and look professional to the record companies? First, you have to have professional quality music on the demo. Don’t record your demo in your home studio unless it can make the same quality as your local studio. Another plus of recording a studio, is professional are there and you are paying them to help you. They can give you tips on how to improve your music. After the music is done, you need to create a great press kit. You need to have your band name, real name, and contact information as the thing that stand out the most. Next you will need a band or artist biography and a resume or your musical work. I would recommend hiring a freelance writer to do this for you unless you are great at writing. Also, if you have any press release information that has been published about your band, attach this with the other files. These are the basics that you need. If you feel that you should put other important stuff in there, by all means do. Just don’t overstuff and oversell your product.
