Movie blogs, movie database websites, movie critics, everyone obsessed with movies have told us that this year we will have a record number of movie sequels.
Yes that’s right, somebody did the math and came up with a total of 27 sequels for this year alone. (Like we care or we can’t count them ourselves).
But this must mean that all their original movies were really that good! Or that profitable of course. That or movie producers are running out of fresh new ideas.
Whatever it is, the Summer of 2011 will surely be sizzling for movie lovers, me included.
Sequels Already Shown in Theaters
These two were already released pre-summer, don’t worry the DVDs would be out before you know it, if it’s not available already. Such are the times we live in.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules, Greg is back and telling us about his everyday home and school life. Obviously Rodrick, his older brother was even more of a problem this time around.
Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, our heroine Red was back with the Wolf of course and Red’s group of Sister Hoods. Why? Because Hansel and Gretel have suddenly disappeared. What else could it be?
2011 Summer Sequels
Here are sequels we can still enjoy this summer:
The Hangover Part II, which I heard is very entertaining and has made a killing over the Memorial Day Weekend. So if you haven’t seen it yet, don’t be surprised to be left out of the animated office conversations when you come back to work today.
Kung Fu Panda 2, the lovable Po now the Dragon Warrior, the Furious Five, their teacher, Master Shifu, new Kung Fu Warriors and a new villain and his henchmen are back for more high-flying and stair-falling kung fu action.
I saw this movie on opening night with my family right before the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend. And I read earlier that it didn’t do as good in the box office as the original. It was also disappointing compared to the Hangover sequel. I suppose we can blame that on the uninteresting trailers. But don’t let those fool you, this movie was awesome!
And if I may dare say, I have seen many dozens of sequels (real sequels) but this one I can truly say is probably, only among a select few, which was really better than the original movie. And the fun part is that you can see it three ways, Real D, 3D and Digital 3D. By the way, I’m Asian and I do Kung Fu.
Cars 2, Lightning is back and so is the lovable Mater and the rest of the crew pit. I read that Pixar was supposed to release this movie for the summer of 2012. But watch out, they moved it this summer instead and it must be because of something good.
On a sad note, Doc Hudson may not be back. Paul Newman who was the voice of Doc died in 2008. George Carlin who voiced Filmore also died that same year.
And if sequels are not enough, we also have a prequel, and that is X:Men – First Class. Meaning this is a sequel but it was supposed to have happened at an earlier time prior to the original movie, not after.
So this was set before the characters we now know as mutants (good or bad) have revealed themselves. This was before Charles Xavier was Professor X or Erik Lehnsherr was Magneto.
We also have the Third installment (Sequel of the sequel, the Second sequel to the original, the Threequel, Trilogy or whatever else you want to call them) of the very successful Transformers The Movie Franchise.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon, as always this will no doubt be an action-filled science-fiction movie from start to finish. Sam Witwicky and the rest of the humans will be back. All Megan Fox fans out there will not be happy (if they don’t know it yet then they are no fans of Megan’s) that she will not be back.
Don’t worry the Autobots and the Decepticons will be there to steal the thunder. There will be a new love interest for Sam and she will have some thunder of her own. Did I mention that she is a model for Victoria’s Secret?
Post Summer 2011 Sequels
Later in the year, we will have Johnny English Reborn in October. In November we will have Happy Feet 2 and Piranha 3DD.
And there will be Sherlock Holmes 2 to round it out in December.
Here are Five 2011 Third Movies
Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son which was shown last February. Madea’s Big Happy Family was out April of this year. Of course, the third Transformers movie was out for summer. Paranormal Activity 3 will come out in October.
And Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, the third installment of this well known trio of singing chipmunks will be released in December.
2011 Record Number of Movie Sequels
With a record number of sequels, it shouldn’t surprise anyone to find out that 2011 will also boast of record numbers for 2nd, 4th and 5th movie sequels, nine, five and five movies each respectively.
Take it or leave it, for the most part a movie sequel will most probably be showing at a theater near you or a DVD release anytime this year or early next year. Have fun, relax, watch a movie!
