The light dusting of pollen on our vehicles is a reliable sign that spring is here. Along with the pollen and seasonal allergies, spring brings beautiful cool weather. Now is the best time to get outdoors and enjoy some of the 2011 spring festivals in and around Columbus Georgia before the sweltering heat of summer arrives.
Spring Fling -Columbus, GA
Spring Fling is an annual week-long event held at the Columbus Civic Center that features a carnival with rides suitable for adults and kids. This year, the event also features a BMX stunt show. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students with valid student ID. Admission is free for children 2 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the Columbus Civic Center box office. Families can enjoy the festivities from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. starting March 29. The hours are extended for the last three days of the festival. Callaway Gardens Spring Celebration -Pine Mountain, GA
This event is an entire month of spring and garden themed activities that the whole family can enjoy. Each week has a specific theme and includes events such as a plant sale, a spring wildflower hike, a vegetable gardening seminar with popular local gardener Walter Reeves, and an Easter egg hunt for everyone from toddlers to senior citizens. The festivities start March 24 and continue through April 29. Callaway Gardens’ standard admission fees apply for each visit and some activities may also require an additional fee. Westville Spring Days Festival -Westville, GA
Historic Westville describes itself as “Georgia’s 1850s Living History Museum”. They offer family events and Civil War reenactments throughout the year. The Westville Spring Days festival will offer demonstrations of old time crafts like spinning, weaving, blacksmithing, woodworking, and candle making. The event is scheduled for May 5 through May 7, 2011. Westville is a 45 minute drive from Columbus. Visit http://www.westville.org for more information.
Cotton Pickin’ Country Fair –Gay, GA
The Cotton Pickin’ Country Fair is one of the most popular events in Georgia. The festival is also a Southeastern Tourism Society Top 20 Event. In addition to historic craft demonstrations, arts and crafts vendors, and food booths, the event will also offer entertainment all day long. This year’s spring festival will be held May 7 through May 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 4 through 12. Children under four are free. Although Gay is about an hour drive from Columbus, attending this event is a must for many Chattahoochee Valley residents. Visit http://www.cpfair.org/ for more information.
