Put on your running shoes! The marathon season is in full swing in Salt Lake City. A 5K is a great way to spend time with family, friends, and support a great cause at the same time. The great part about a 5K is that while many serious runners compete, it’s a less “formal” than a full-on city marathon. You don’t have to be in great shape, you don’t have to run to win, and you don’t even have to run. My favorite 5K events in Salt Lake City welcome participants from every class and activity category, from the babe in stroller (I would suggest not carrying Jr. for the entire 5 kilometers), to those who walk at their own pace. The point is to get out and have a little fun in the sun with the whole family.
This year offers several great venues for 5K family fun.
The Pride Day 5K
This run is held in conjunction with the Utah Pride Festival, celebrating diversity in Utah. There are two packages to choose from. This fun run on June 4, 2011 will take you through the heart of Salt Lake City, past the Capitol Building and into Memory Grove. Heck, the view is worth it all by itself! The first is only $25.00 if you sign up in advance online, here. You will receive a Pride ball cap with your entry fee. The second really show your support of the cause. For $65.00 you get a Super Pride Strider registration that includes two all day tickets to Pride Festival Events, preferred seating by the stage for performances, and a T-shirt. A portion of the proceeds for the 5K event will benefit the Utah Pride Center Student Scholarship Program, which offers scholarships to gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender students and allies.
Art Attack 5K
The Utah Arts Festival is one of the best in the country, and this year is shaping up to be no exception. The 5K, to be held June 25, 2011 at Sugarhouse Park (1500 East 2100 South in Salt Lake City), supports the Children’s Art Yard free activities. The Utah Arts Festival welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, so it’s great fun for the whole family. To make it even more fun, you can dress up at a work of art and compete for the best living work of art prize. There is also a 1K option in the registration process for those who wish to participate but have family members who may not be able to complete the whole 5K. Registration is online and the cost is $30.00 if you register after May 25, 2011.
Haiti’s Kids Fun Run
Zion’s Children Haiti is an organization that partners with educators in Haiti to help children in Haiti go to school. They are hosting a 5k and 1K Kids Fun Run on July 9, 2011 at Sugarhouse Park. You can find out more about the event and registration, which is $25.00 for adults and $10.00 for children, at their official website. The cost of the run is considered a donation, and the prices listed here are the minimum donations required, and organizers will accept more.
