Britney Spears performed not once ‘” but twice! ‘” at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards. The performances ‘” her first since the 2007 MTV VMAs ‘” featured Spears performing with both Rihanna and Nicki Minaj.
The result? Lackluster.
Sure, we were really looking forward to seeing Brit Brit kill it on stage. Instead, both performances were less than one minute and featured very obvious lip-syncing with awkward dance movements. We can usually deal with Brit’s miming, but both Rihanna and Minaj performed life, throwing both performances off balance.
Sure, she locked lips with Rihanna, but no one saw that live on television.
What has changed about Britney? She’s just not the same anymore and it makes us sad. Here are a few theories.
Britney Spears: Stage Fright?
There used to be a time ‘” the early 2000’s ‘” when Britney commanded every stage she set foot on. She danced, sang (sometimes) and provided several award shows with their most memorable moments.
These days? Britney smiles and appears happy, but there’s something empty about her eyes. It’s like all of her confidence has been zapped away and in its place is insecurity.
We know she’s had a rough few years — we can’t say our confidence wouldn’t take a beating too. However, she just doesn’t seem at home on stage.
Britney Spears: Still Ill?
That empty look might show that Brit is still suffering the effects of her well-publicized breakdown in 2007 and 2008. Sure, she’s trying to show that everything is back to normal, but is it really?
“I’m pretty normal, you know?” Spears told Harpar’s Bazaar in their June issue. “Like I said, the type of day I love is just like everybody else’s. I’m like everybody else.”
But she’s not.
“The image you’re seeing that looks normal is constructed by team of people,” Ian Drew, senior music editor at US Weekly, told ABC News. “There’s a smokescreen of people that parade her out. She has people around her to make sure she doesn’t rebound. This is someone who is very ill.”
In fact, Brit’s parents are still keeping a very tight reign on her. They said she’s “mentally incapable” of testifying in the case against her former manager, Sam Luft.
“Britney is doing a lot better than she was, but they (her camp) are afraid that standing trial will throw her back into depression and instability,” a source told FOX411’s Pop Tarts. “They’re avoiding all situations that could derail her progression.”
We wish she could just go away for a long while, spend time with her kids and truly get better. Yes, we love seeing her live, but it’s clear that she still needs help.
