2011 ACM Awards Winners: Miranda Lambert Accepts Four, Taylor Swift Gets the Big One

The 2011 Academy of Country Music Awards had country’s biggest stars vying for the trophies Sunday evening, with Zac Brown Band leading the nominations with nine. But it would be a girls night out in Las Vegas for the 46th annual ceremony, as Miranda Lambert took home four awards, Lady Antebellum and The Band Perry would gather up two each, and Taylor Swift ended the night winning the biggest prize of all.

The 46th Annual (2011) ACM Awards kicked off at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with the guys having a definite edge in the nominations, given that they not only had the Zac Brown Band’s nine (the most for any particular artist) but also had the advantage in that four of the six nominees for Entertainer of the Year were of the male persuasion. But it would turn out to be ladies night for most of the ceremony, with female singers Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift winning five awards between them (Lambert took home four ACMs) and female-led duos and bands like Lady Antebellum, Sugarland, and The Band Perry winning many of the others.

In fact, except for the Zac Brown Band’s lone victory for Vocal Event of the Year (“As She’s Walking Away” duet with Alan Jackson) to keep them from being a 9-nomination shutout, the guys were left to win only two other awards: Male Vocalist of the Year (Brad Paisley) and Top New Solo Vocalist of the Year (Eric Church). Female artists dominated the evening, sweeping the rest of the awards.

Miranda Lambert had the biggest night of all, stepping up to center stage four times to take home Single, Song, Video (all for “The House That Built Me”), and Female Artist of the Year. Although she was nominated for two others, Vocal Event and Entertainer of the Year, she saw the aforementioned Zac Brown Band take the former and the pop crossover Taylor Swift win the latter, the ACMs biggest award.

Lady Antebellum and The Band Perry would take home two ACMs each. Lady Antebellum, co-led by Hillary Scott, won Vocal Group and Album of the Year (“Need You Now”). The Band Perry, led by lead singer sibling Kimberly Perry, took away the New Solo Artist and New Vocal Duo or Group awards.

Sugarland, led by Jennifer Nettles, won the Vocal Duo or Group award.

The 20-year-old Swift won the Entertainer of the Year on the back of her chart-topping videos and songs from her multi-platinum “Fearless” and “Speak Now” albums, not to mention her sold-out Fearless Tour of the U.S., Canada, and Australia, which ran from April 2009 to June 2010. “Fearless,” which has been certified six-times platinum, produced a Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 and Country Songs single, the title track, in 2010 (the album generated five Top 10 hits on both charts, including two No. 1 songs on the country list). “Speak Now,” which has been certified three-times platinum, generated two more Top 10 singles in 2010.

The 46th Annual ACM Awards were hosted by Blake Shelton and Reba McEntire.
