In case you were previously unaware, eBay has a new policy to save sellers money on listing items. For EVERY seller, the first 50 items listed every month may be posted without any listing fees, regardless of the price! Since becoming aware of this policy, I have found a number of items that not only sell well but were simply sitting around collecting dust in storage. Note that there are final value fees, but without any listing fees, you have no risk in listing your items!
1. Action Figures
Does your child have an overflow of action figures? Even if you cannot identify the actual character, post as much information as possible with your picture, and you may well have a sale! Garage sales often have bags of action figures available for extremely low prices. I frequently pick these up and am continuously surprised at the number of individuals that collect action figures that are in used condition.
2. Recipe Books
Every recipe book I have posted has sold- even books from the early 1990s. Ensure that the book is in excellent to new condition, and you often will not even have to take a picture with eBay’s product finder.
3. Costume Jewelry
Clean out your jewelry box so that you can buy some new baubles! Pins and clip earrings sell especially well on eBay. Be sure your camera captures the details of your items. If you have silver- or gold- toned items that have tarnished, purchase some cleaner to dip them in to make them look as good as new.
4. Happy Meal Toys
Have some old Happy Meal Toys from popular movies or TV shows? Try posting them online- you never know what it may sell for! If you have more than one of a particular type, try selling them all together as a lot.
5. Cassette Tapes
Surprisingly, some types of cassette tapes are in high demand. The best sellers from my experience are old-school rap, comedy tapes, and classic rock. Classical and country tapes are much more difficult to sell, but it’s always worth it to try!
6. Stuffed Animals
Any unique stuffed animals you may have lying around just might sell. As long as they are not stained and are cleaned, try posting them. Especially popular are more unique animals such as snow leopards, buffalo, lizards, etc.
7. Barbie Items
Barbies and Barbie items remain popular with children and collectors alike. Try selling Barbie items individually, or in small lots such as with Barbie shoes. Be sure to describe the condition in detail or you will likely be fielding questions from collectors. Barbie outfits can be sold individually and are incredibly easy to ship! Don’t be afraid to sell homemade Barbie clothes either- sometimes these are more exciting to young girls than Barbie brand clothes!
8. Polly Pockets
Pollly Pocket item lots can sell for sky-high prices on eBay. Try selling Polly Pockets individually, as well as sets of a few related clothing items. Often times this method works well since Polly Pocket clothes are unfortunately easily torn.
Have a pair of shoes that you wore once and have no desire to wear again? Try posting it on eBay, stating that they have only been worn once. Since I purchase shoes inexpensively to begin with, I have been very pleased that I can sell shoes that I cannot return. This includes both women’s and children’s shoes, but particularly women’s shoes. What woman has enough shoes?
10. Thomas the Train Items
Anything and everything Thomas the Train is a hot ticket right now. This includes the cars, pajamas, t-shirts, etc. I have seen t-shirts in poor condition command bids over $5! Once your child grows out of their Thomas the Train clothing items, why not post them online and recoup a little of what you spent on them?
As you can see, simply looking around your house for items you no longer need just might provide you with that bit of supplemental income you are looking for. One of my biggest recommendations to save time posting your items is to work on a large number of items at a time, rather than a few at a time. This gets you into a flow of listing and will decrease the number of days you are shipping items. Following my recommendations, you’ll get a little extra cash in your pocket and your home de-cluttered for no more than some time and a small portion of the final selling price. Have fun and good luck!
