10 Film Guide for the Summer Season!

Summer is upon us and to some that means beaches, vacations and summer blockbusters. Summer also has another connection to films other than blockbusters, in some films they are the backdrop of the setting and sometimes even in the title. So this is my guide of films that are for the summer season.

1. Jaws

A major summer film and to some a summer nightmare. Jaws shows us this little coastal town that has a nice beach, pretty nice townspeople, and well a great white shark that is killing people. It’ an essential summer film that tells us in the back of our mines is the water really safe today.

2. Friday the 13th
(Skip the remake)

Summer Camp, a place that most kids been too. It’s suppose to be a fun place for both the child and the camp counselor well not in this 80s slasher film. Summer camp is a slaughterhouse for the teen counselors. Kevin Bacon made one of his first appearances in this film too. An essential horror summer film and one of my personal favorites.

3. Piranha (Not the remake)

Like Jaws, Piranha is a summer nightmare film. Except having one shark to contend with you have hundreds of these fleshing eating piranhas attacking you. Guess having watching both Jaws and this one, one might not want to go in the water anymore.

4. National Lampoon’s Vacation

A very funny film here the Griswold’s show us that family vacations sometimes aren’t perfect but you can laugh on the way. I’ve always thought that Chevy Chase and well really the whole cast was quite funny. So after you’ve watched Jaws, Piranha, and Friday the 13th you can laugh off the terrors.

5. I Know What You Did Last Summer

While the book is way better and more suspenseful, the film still should be mentioned on this list. It was a 90s teen horror film not as good as Scream but it has the word summer in it. Also it has the lines of every 80s slasher, revenge if you want to go that deep into to it.

6. Summer of Sam

Spike Lee directs this thriller that is based on the real murders during the summer of 1977 in New York City. The film centers on an Italian-American South Bronx neighborhood and how they live in fear and distrust of their neighbors. A film to watch in the middle of summer when your bored and also if you’re interested into crime. Just to go around spying or thinking that your neighbors are murderers.

7. Mr. Hulot’s Holiday

Have to add this funny French film about Monsieur Hulot who comes to a beachside hotel for a vacation, where he accidentally causes havoc. Another very funny film to watch to laugh those summer days away.

8. Summertime

David Lean’s film that I think if you’re looking for a summer romance you should watch this first maybe. Anyways middle aged Jane Hudson finally gets to go to Venice and there she has an unexpected romance. I would also like to brag about this film too, it’s so good that the Criterion Collection gave it a release, just thought you would like to know that.

9. Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation

A comedy that is great for the whole family, it’s about Mr. Hobbs who wants to spend a quiet holiday at the beach, but his wife has invited all their family to stay with them. James Stewart plays Mr. Hobbs by the way.

10. Suddenly, Last Summer

Another film that has the word summer in it and talks about murder. The plot is like this the son of wealthy widow Violet Venable dies while on vacation with his cousin Catherine. Whatever the girl saw was so horrible that she went crazy. Violet she wants to cover up the truth for some reason… Who doesn’t like a murder mystery especially when it takes place in summer? Both powerhouse actresses Katherine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor starred in this summer thriller.

So those are your summer films and when you’re bored with the blockbusters that you went and saw maybe watch these for the first time or for the hundredth time.
