1. Arriving late
This is the most important common mistake. I would prefer there one hour or earlier then one minute late. Being late says that this job is not important to you. Would you be late if you were going to receive a million dollar check? If you are not prepared or the worst happens and you have a flat tire then call and reschedule before your interview time.
2. Dress for the interview
Unless you are taking a job at a fast food restaurant, dress in the best clothes you have. It is better to be over dressed and be told that you do not have to dress up then to under dress and not even be offered the job. Make sure you have the same color socks and same color shoes on. Look in the mirror to see if everything is in place.
3. Your mouth should be almost empty
There will be no smoking, chewing gum, or drinking alcohol. You can use a breath mint right before you go in but make sure it is gone before the interview.
4. Read about the company and position
You should know read as much as you can about the hiring company. Study questions and answers for the position that you want.
5. Do answer questions but no more
When asked a question answer the question and then stop talking. Continuing to talk might get you to say something that is incorrect. When you say something that is incorrect, they might hire someone else who has not made that mistake.
6. Ask for the Job
This may seem like a crazy thing to do but the interviewers want to know if you want the job. Yes, you did come to the interview wanting the job. They wonder after hearing everything about the job, do you still want the job?
7. No badmouthing period
New companies do not want to hear how bad your previous employers were. They will begin to worry that the problem may not be with the boss but with you. They do not know you yet and you are already complaining. They get enough complaining from the current employees.
Yes Smile during the interview keep a smile. Smile and the world smiles with you, frown the world will not want to be around. Advertisers know this and you will always see the before picture with a frown and the after picture with a smile.
9. Make a list of interview questions
Visit the many websites that have questions and print out the list of questions. Prepare to answer these questions. Have someone ask you these questions. The first time driving a car you did not feel comfortable and the first interview will feel uncomfortable. It is best of make that interview with a friend instead of the actual interview.
10. Do not ask about Benefits
There is no use asking about the benefits if you do not have the job. Make sure they offer you the job before asking about benefits. If you are asking about the benefits when they are trying to decide whether to hire you, they might wonder if you only want to job due to the benefits.
